Efficient inventory management is critical to minimising an organisation’s production costs. It eliminates waste in work, process and product hours while ensuring you have enough stock to meet customers’ demands. However, with so many goods in movement, keeping tabs on each process can be challenging. That’s where SAP inventory management comes into play. The software equips you with tools to ease the inventory management process while helping you identify areas that need improvement. Here’s more about SAP business.
What is SAP Inventory Management?
SAP inventory management is a system that helps businesses manage and streamline the movement of materials or goods in and out of the warehouse or storage facility to enhance organisational efficiency. Three processes are key to using the SAP inventory management system efficiently:
- Monitoring of data: This involves acquiring knowledge of the different inventory classes in a company and identifying their changes over time
- Analyzing data: This is a strategy to help you develop action items based on the inventory data collected
- Managing and executing action items: Each team is assigned a course(s) of action it must undertake
The system renders tools required to handle physical inventory productively and fulfill customer purchase orders effectively. Once the software is integrated into the company’s inventory system, it updates changes in real-time.
As such, the system updates the inventory quantity every time a customer buys goods via your e-commerce store. This is a critical feature of real-time inventory management because you can easily run ATP (Available-to-Promise) checks.
How to Use SAP Inventory Management Software
Two organisational levels must be created for SAP inventory management software to work:
The plant: This is the physical location where inventory processes occur like the issuance of goods
Storage location: This is a designated area for storing inventory. It can be a racking system, room, trailer, room, or a space in the plant defined by painted lines on the shop floor. Inventory materials can be finished goods, raw materials, work-in-progress, maintenance, or finished goods
Benefits of SAP Inventory Management
Integrating SAP software in inventory management has the following benefits:
- Improves customer satisfaction: The software helps a business organize and track goods in transit. Customers can also access information about their packages in real-time
- Gain valuable supply chain insights: Monitoring inventory levels provides valuable insights into inventory management operations which can minimize inventory levels and improve working capital
- Reduce costs: SAP software improves inventory management which helps reduce costs and eliminates the risk of having a stock out after receiving a purchase order
- Auto-generate a price list: SAP software also helps you generate different price lists for products allowing you to offer customized prices to customers
Goods Movement
SAP inventory management has a feature called goods movement that allows you to track how goods flow in a plant or warehouse. The movement shows when goods are handed over to a customer or vendor within an organization. This is the most important indicator of where the material is in the supply chain. Goods movements are classified into different categories and are assigned a three-digit code. They include:
Materials received from the supplier or the company’s production process are goods receipts. A goods receipt is performed when materials are required for immediate use, or tests are performed for quality inspection
Goods issue: Goods in a warehouse are sold to a customer or used in production processes. Whatever the case, the stock issuance reduces the stock levels at the plant
Internal movements: This refers to the transfer of stock from one storage location to another for further production orders, quality checks, or customer delivery. SAP optimizes inventory management which contributes a long way in optimizing a company’s supply chain
Stock transfer: This is the deduction of goods from one spot in a warehouse to another. Stock transfers happen within the factory or between two factories
Transfer posting: This refers to the changes in a stock’s class or category of goods. The posting is done during the physical movement of the goods
Every time a goods movement is recorded, a material document is generated to support the activity; otherwise, no movement has occurred. Material documents have a standard structure consisting of a header and an item.
SAP Warehouse Management
SAP can also be integrated into a warehouse management system to help a company manage all aspects of warehouse logistics. The SAP system is responsible for warehouse management and provides a high level of control. So, SAP WMS allows the user to monitor a product’s movement and access details like the assignment of storage bins and specific storage locations.
